"Promises, Promises"

CAST: Wendell, Norman

WENDELL:  (SINGING) "Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot and..." (CONTINUES THROUGH MOST OF THE VERSE)

NORMAN:   (ENTERS) Hi there, Wendell.

WENDELL:   Oh, hi Norman.

NORMAN:   Say what're you singin' there, Wendell?

WENDELL:   I was singing, "Auld Lang Syne."

NORMAN:   What for?

WENDELL:   Well, it's almost New Year's Day you know.  (PAUSE) How're you gonna spend it, Norm?

NORMAN:   How did you know I got some money for Christmas?  I didn't tell anybody.

WENDELL:   No.  I mean how're you gonna spend New Year's Day?

NORMAN:   Oh!  Well, I got a new TV for Christmas and I thought I'd sit and watch about a million football games.

WENDELL:   Is that all?

NORMAN:   Yeah.  Of course, I am gonna make some revolutions.

WENDELL:   Some what?

NORMAN:   Some New Year's revolutions.  You know, those promises you make to yourself and keep for about two weeks.

WENDELL:   Oh, you mean resolutions.

NORMAN:   That is what I said, revolutions.

WENDELL:   You know Norm, my Sunday school teacher said that God would rather we didn't make promises we aren't going to keep.  God always keeps his promises and expects us to do the same.

NORMAN:   Geewhiz.  I never thought of it that way.  You mean I better think pretty hard before I make any of those revolutions, huh?

WENDELL:  Resolutions, and yes, you should.

NORMAN:   Yeah.  (PAUSE) Hey Wendell.  What if I do make a revolution...

WENDELL:   (SIGH) I give up.

NORMAN:   What?

WENDELL:   Nothing.

NORMAN:   Oh.  Well, if I do make a revolution and I have trouble keepin' it, can I tell God I was only kidding and take it back?

WENDELL:   No.  You can never take back a promise, but you can ask God to help you keep it.  1 Corinthians 10:13 says... "No temptation is irresistible.  You can trust God to keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can't stand up against it, for He has promised this and will do what He says."

NORMAN:   Wow!  That means I won't have to worry about breaking my promise.  I can ask God to help me keep it.

WENDELL:   That's right.

NORMAN:   Say, Wendell, you wanna come over and watch the football games with me?

WENDELL:   Sure, Norm, and by the way, how much money did you get for Christmas?  (THEY LEAVE)
